Paralysis

Paralysis—the Causes, the Costs

Paralysis, usually associated with traumatic brain or spinal cord injury, an infection such as Group B Strep or meningitis, or lack of oxygen (brain hypoxia), changes a person's life in a way that can hardly be described in words. Quadriplegia or paraplegia is accompanied by a loss of independence and mobility; the need for life-long medical care, therapy, and assistance with daily tasks; and possibly the loss of dignity that accompanies incontinence or impotence. Other types of paralysis prevent people from participating in sports or other favorite activities or continuing in their life's work.

At Michels & Watkins in Los Angeles we are personal injury lawyers. We cannot turn back the clock for our clients, but we can help them rebuild their lives. As your attorneys, we will fight for your right to compensation that provides high quality medical care and therapy throughout your life, and allows you to live with dignity and take care of your family.

Do you know exactly what happened? We invite you to contact our LA office and arrange for a free medical/legal consultation. Bradford S. Davis, M.D., head of our medical team will evaluate your medical history, and our attorneys will review the legal aspects of your claim. When we have determined whether you have a claim related to the paralysis, we will give you all of the information we have uncovered. If you ask us to represent you, our attorneys will fight for your right to maximum compensation. We have recovered millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements over the years, including a single verdict of $120 million.

When determining the value of your claim our lawyers will work with rehabilitation specialists to analyze future medical needs and get a picture of all that can be done to help our client function as fully as possible, including accessible housing and transportation, wheelchairs, and computer equipment. When handling a child case involving quadriplegia or paraplegia, it is common for us to structure a settlement or verdict so that a handicapped accessible house is purchased in the name of child or parent. It is exciting to see photographs of parents exercising children in their own swimming pools—it is our goal to change our clients' lives.
